We are proud and excited to present our next retreat, taking place over a full moon this coming February. For five days we will cocoon ourselves within IKAL, formerly known as Mayaland Resort, a stunning historical resort located directly next to the main pyramid at Chichén Itzá. The epic location cannot be understated. Once a city of the Mayan people, Chichén Itzá was built over 3000 years ago and in its time was a vibrant hub with many religious gathering spaces within its walls. Now the ruins are recognized and honored as a sacred site, rich in the palpable energy of the ancient realms of human history.
The Marakames: Healers of the Wixarika People
We are honored to be joined by Eugenio Lopez, Eusebio Lopez and Antonio Carrillo Lopez - three Marakames from the Wixarika people.
The Wixarika people are one of Mexico´s native peoples. They are native to the mountains of North-Mexico and the guardians of the sacred Wirikuta desert. They have an unbroken lineage of their indigenous culture, never interrupted or broken by colonialism, and therefore they have all their ancient knowledge completely intact. Within Wixarika culture, they have a hierarchy in the healing arts, where the title marakame only is reserved for those that hold the highest initiations of a healer and spiritual doctor.
The work of a marakame is to treat diseases and blockages, but also to always keep the dialogue with the spirit world and keep the order for everything to go well on the planet. They go through a lifetime of intensive studies of offerings, pilgrimages, diets and deep works before only a few reach this prestigious title. It is a huge honor to be learning from them.
The Marakames will guide us through a traditional all night healing ceremony with the sacred medicine of Hikuri, also known as Peyote. Hikuri is a cactus that grows native to Wirikuta and has been used for thousands of years by the Wixarika people and is completely essential to their culture and cosmovision. In the ceremony, the marakame communicates with the spirit of Kayumari - the blue deer - which is the spirit of the peyote and the marakames greatest force of alliance. For those looking for healing, a new start, clarity, connection and purpose, peyote can be a great master, and the marakame can help to clean you up. If you seek to connect with the medicine of Peyote in a traditional way, you truly are in the very best hands.

Curawaka has been studying with the Wixarika people for many years and are greatly inspired by their teachings and culture. It is an honour for us to share this very special offering with them. The song "Shamboriri" features Eusebio Lopez, who is one of the three marakames to join us in Chichen Itza. With this being a Curawaka retreat, we can expect much music to be enjoyed throughout, including a private concert, a vocal workshop with Anna Bariyani and a musical workshop with Tavo Vazquez, Alberto Arroyo and Dario Santamaria Romero. We cannot wait to sing and play together with you underneath the stars, under guidance of the wise ones, in this beautiful location on Sacred Mayan territory.

The absolutely stunning grounds of IKAL Chichen Itza will be our home, featuring spacious rooms and bungalows, multiple swimming pools and abundant space to explore and unwind on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. By night the hum of the jungle will sooth us to sleep, by day we will awake to the songs of birdsong, richly enveloped by the mystical energy of the pyramids next door. We will enjoy the delicious treats of traditional Mexican cuisine and enjoy the rich beauty of these lush gardens of Paradise.
